Economy: From 1500-1940, Europe was the world's dominant trading and industrial region. During the last half of the 20th century, the North American and then the east and southeast Asian economies moved ahead of those of Europe. Gradually, the former communist states are strengthening, and the European Union (EU) is growing to include most European nations. Millions of people from poorer countries in Eastern Europe, Africa and Asia are migrating to Western Europe to enjoy the wealth and opportunities available in those countries.
