Africa and Middle East

Population: 1 billion 220 million
Size: 14,741,664 sq. miles
Major Religions: Muslim, Protestant, Independent, Hindu, Greek and Russian Orthodox, Jewish
Economy: Africa's economy has not grown for 40 years. Many countries have become poorer because of population growth, lack of investment in agriculture, and little development of food production methods. Some government rulers have stolen government money, while borrowing more foreign aid for their country. There have also been devastating famines, drought and war. Whole economies in central and southern Africa are deteriorating because of diseases like AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis.

In the Middle East there are very poor and very rich countries. There are highly developed urban, industrial economies, and rural economies where people live in poverty. Parts of the Middle East are involved in war constantly, making it hard for people to live or work.
